FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The United States of America—”land of the free, home of the brave”–leads the world in incarceration. In this “beacon of democracy”, over 2 million people live in cages—roughly the population of the city of Houston. What’s even more shocking is that over a half million people are locked up but not convicted of a crime. The result of mass incarceration is that one in four Black men are at risk of being locked up in their lifetime, while Latinx and indigenous people are also at a higher risk than their white counterparts. The War on Drugs is a significant driver of incarceration, as hundreds of thousands each year are arrested for low-level, nonviolent offenses. The rhetoric of the “war” also helps ensure public support for aggressive policing in vulnerable communities—at the expense of investment in housing and social support. Meanwhile the economics of drug prohibition ensure a thriving, multi-billion dollar illicit market that fuels immense violence and suffering on American streets and in Latin America.

This track, “Timothy”, is dedicated to one such man who was harmed by the War on Drugs. Timothy Tyler served 26 years in federal prison on charges related to trafficking LSD. He endured torture, forced medical treatment, and intimidation from both officers and other incarcerated men. In 2016, President Obama granted Tyler clemency—a life changing moment that resulted in his release two years later.

The outside world was unrecognizable. “They got billboards with pictures that move in them,” he said. “It’s like space age out here compared to when I left!” Tyler’s story is inspiring—unfortunately, as even he acknowledged, the vast majority of drug prisoners have not had the good luck he did. It’s time we bring them all back home.
